Description
A quick and easy 15-minute dinner hack featuring crispy, seasoned chickpeas made in the air fryer. Perfect for busy weeknights, this plant-based meal is high in protein and fiber.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cans (15 oz each / 425g) canned chickpeas, low-sodium preferred
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Open cans of chickpeas and pour into a colander. Rinse under cold water for 30 seconds to remove excess sodium and liquid. Shake vigorously to remove excess water.
- Lay chickpeas on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Pat dry and roll gently to absorb all moisture. They should look matte, not shiny.
- Place dried chickpeas in a small bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, smoked paprika, oregano, and salt. Toss well until every chickpea is evenly coated.
- Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3 minutes if recommended by your model.
- Toss chickpeas into the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd; cook in batches if necessary.
- Cook for 12-15 minutes. At the 6-minute mark, pull the basket out and shake it to ensure even cooking.
- Check at 12 minutes. Chickpeas should be golden brown and crispy. If still soft, cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Let cool in the basket for 2-3 minutes to allow crunch to set. Taste and add more salt if needed. Serve warm.
Notes
Drying the chickpeas thoroughly is the most critical step for achieving crispiness. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket, as this leads to steaming rather than crisping. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes if they soften.
