Description
A warm, comforting apple crisp featuring a perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors with a crunchy oat topping and homemade salted caramel sauce.
Ingredients
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples; mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (150g)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed (113g)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt plus a pinch for finishing
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup salted caramel sauce (180ml)
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice apples into roughly 1/4-inch thick pieces. Toss in a large bowl with granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir to coat evenly.
- In another bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, oats, remaining cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add cold cubed butter and work it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fingers until crumbly with pea-sized butter bits.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples without pressing down.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the crisp on the middle rack for 45 to 50 minutes until apples are bubbling and topping is golden brown.
- Let the crisp cool for about 10 minutes. Drizzle salted caramel sauce generously over the top and optionally sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt.
- Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
