Description
A sophisticated, alcohol-free mocktail featuring tart blood orange and cranberry juices with a spicy ginger beer kick. It offers a visually dramatic layered effect and complex flavor profile perfect for Halloween parties.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (480ml) blood orange juice
- 1 cup (240ml) unsweetened cranberry juice
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) fresh lime juice
- 1 bottle (12oz / 355ml) dry ginger beer
- Ice
- Optional: Lime wheels for garnish
- Optional: Fresh thyme sprigs for garnish
- Optional: Black food coloring (1 drop)
Instructions
- Prep your citrus by washing and juicing blood oranges to yield 2 cups, and squeezing fresh lime juice for 2 tablespoons.
- In a large pitcher, combine the blood orange juice, unsweetened cranberry juice, and fresh lime juice. Stir gently to combine.
- Taste the mixture and adjust sweetness with honey or tartness with more lime if necessary.
- Chill the juice mixture in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Fill highball or Collins glasses with ice. Optionally rim glasses with sugar or red food coloring.
- Pour the chilled juice mixture over the ice in each glass, filling them about 3/4 full.
- Slowly pour the ginger beer over the back of a spoon held just above the surface of the juice to create a layered effect.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and a sprig of fresh thyme. Serve immediately.
Notes
Use dry ginger beer rather than ginger ale for a spicy kick. If blood oranges are unavailable, use navel orange juice and add extra cranberry for color. The juice base can be made up to 4 hours ahead and stored in the fridge; add ginger beer just before serving to maintain carbonation. For a spicy variation, add jalapeño slices to the pitcher for 10 minutes before removing.
