Description
A visually stunning and delicious layered latte combining fresh strawberry syrup and earthy matcha, perfect as a sweet, refreshing treat that’s easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh strawberries (about 150g)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (25g)
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder (about 2g)
- 1/4 cup hot water (60ml, about 175°F / 80°C)
- 1 cup milk of choice (240ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Ice cubes (as needed)
Instructions
- Rinse and hull strawberries. Chop roughly and add to a small saucepan with sugar and 1/4 cup water. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until strawberries break down and syrup thickens. Mash berries with a spoon for more flavor. Optional: strain syrup to remove seeds. Let cool to room temperature.
- Warm water to just below boiling (around 175°F / 80°C). Place matcha powder in a bowl or mug and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion with hot water until fully dissolved and frothy, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Optional: sift matcha powder before whisking to avoid clumps.
- Heat milk gently until warm but not boiling (about 140°F / 60°C). Stir in vanilla extract. Optional: froth milk for a frothier latte.
- In a glass, spoon 2-3 tablespoons of cooled strawberry syrup into the bottom. Add a handful of ice cubes.
- Slowly pour warm milk over the back of a spoon to create a smooth layer above the syrup.
- Gently pour matcha over the milk layer using the back of a spoon for a slow pour to create a distinct green layer on top.
- Serve immediately with a straw or spoon. Stir before drinking to blend flavors.
Notes
Use chilled milk for better layering. Let strawberry syrup cool completely before assembling to prevent melting ice and mixing layers. Pour liquids slowly over the back of a spoon to maintain distinct layers. Adjust sweetness to taste. Frozen strawberries can be used but fresh is best for flavor and color. Pre-made strawberry jam thinned with water can be a shortcut for syrup.
